SPC Trick 3, Know Your Target - A Wayworld Tutorial
Back | Tutorial Content Guide | Next Page

What do you want the process to do? The Targets you set are numbers that say "this is what we want to happen".  These numbers can define manufactured goods, service or behavior outcomes... anything you want to measure that affects the achievement of your mission

For example:
"To fit in the furniture I'm building,
I want this piece of wood to be 2 1/4 inches wide."

Since we know that all process have natural variation, is "zero variation" then a good expectation? Absolutely not! So, the question is not only "what's the target average result", but also "how much variation is acceptable?"

For example:
"To fit in the furniture I'm building,
I want this piece of wood to be 2 1/4 inches wide,
and no more than 1/64th inch more, or less, than 2 1/4 inches."

Your target will have three parts:
  • The center point: what should the average results be? ·
  • The high point: what is the maximum acceptable variation from average? (anything higher than this is waste). ·
  • The low point: what is the minimum variation from target? (Anything lower than this is waste).

So, the process begins. We start cutting wood. We measure the outcomes (just like counting the rolls of dice in Trick 1). A normal distribution begins to appear...
