In a normal distribution, the average is the high point of the curve.

If a process has a Target (a standard or specification we want to produce), then the AVERAGE of the process should be near the TARGET.
To calculate the average, 
  • add up all the values measured to get the Sum 
  • count how many values were used to get the Count 
  • divide the Sum by the Count:

What is the SUM of widths?
What is the COUNT of widths?
What is the average width?
